Single or double kick pedal: how to choose on an electronic drum kit

The question almost always arrives in the same order: the drummer wants a double pedal first, then finds out the whole electronic kit has an opinion about it. On an acoustic kit you need a head and enough hoop room for the second beater. On an electronic one, the decision runs through three parts that have to agree with each other — the pedal, the surface taking the hit, and the module reading the signal.

It pays to understand what each of those parts demands before you choose, because swapping a pedal is easy and swapping a kick base after the kit is built is a lot less so.

What changes mechanically from a single to a double

A single pedal is a closed mechanism: footboard, shaft, spring, beater. You set spring tension and beater angle, and the behaviour ends there.

A double adds a second footboard tied to the same shaft through a linkage — an articulated rod that crosses the front of the kit and carries your left foot's motion to the second beater. That transmission charges a mechanical price: the slave side has more mass in motion and more accumulated play in its joints, so the two sides never feel identical out of the box. Matching the feel between both feet is fine-adjustment work, done with the kit set up where you actually play it.

There is a side effect few players see coming: the linkage rod occupies the front of the rack, exactly where the hi-hat stand's leg usually sits. On a compact electronic kit that forces you to reposition hi-hat and snare, and sometimes to raise the rack a few centimetres to clear the rod's path.

Beater pedal or sensor pedal: the fork that comes first

There are two families of kick triggering in the electronic world, and only one of them accepts a double pedal.

The beaterless sensor pedal carries its electronics inside the pedal body. You press, the sensor reads the motion and sends the signal to the module. No physical impact hits any surface, which makes it the quietest option and the smallest footprint on the floor — real weight for anyone practising in an apartment and packing the kit away afterwards. A beater pedal needs something to strike: a flat kick pad or a kick tower. Your foot's motion becomes an actual impact, and the sensor reads the strike rather than the pedal's travel. It is the setup that comes closest to an acoustic kick, and the only one that takes two beaters on the same target. Anyone with a double pedal on the horizon has to settle this fork first. A sensor pedal takes no second beater, and no module setting works around that.

Will your kick take two beaters?

An impact surface has a usable width, and two beaters have to sit side by side inside it.

On a narrow flat kick pad, the beaters end up misaligned: one lands near the centre, the other out by the edge. That creates two problems at once. First, a volume gap between your feet, because sensor response drops as the strike moves away from the centre. Second, wear concentrated on an edge spot nobody designed for repeated impact.

A kick tower solves both: a wider surface, a sensor mounted behind the centre, and a frame sized to carry the weight of a bolted-on pedal. The guidance you find in module manuals is always the same — set both beaters at an equal distance from the centre, rather than leaving the main one in the middle and the second one on the rim. Measure it with a tape before you tighten the clamps.

The module decides whether the double works

This is the stage where most players get stuck the first time they set up a double. The pedal arrives, the beaters mount fine, and the module starts firing ghost notes or eating fast strokes.

Three parameters govern that behaviour.

Sensitivity sets the gain on the signal coming from the trigger. Too low and the module misses the lighter strokes from your less-trained foot. Too high and one beater's vibration makes the sensor read the other as a stroke.

Retrigger defines how long the module ignores residual oscillation after a stroke. Raising it kills the ghost note, but raising it past what you need swallows the second stroke of a fast double — the exact thing you bought the pedal to play.

Mask time works in a similar range, setting a window in milliseconds inside which strokes falling close together count as one. For a double kick, this is the most delicate adjustment on the whole kit: the window has to be short enough to pass two notes in sequence and long enough to stop the first stroke's vibration from becoming a note.

Chain, direct drive, and the adjustments that matter more

Two drive systems split the pedal market.

Chain drive links the footboard to the beater shaft through links. It is the most common standard, holds up to heavy use, and carries a slight elasticity in its travel that many players describe as a looser feel. A double chain gives the footboard more lateral stability and wears more slowly; a single chain runs a bit lighter and quicker, with less side support.

Direct drive replaces the chain with a rigid rod. Fewer contact points means less slack between what your foot does and what the beater delivers, which helps on very fast strokes and gives a more direct read of the motion. In exchange, the return is stiffer and less forgiving of imprecise technique.

Whichever system you pick, three adjustments shape the result more than the choice between chain and rod: spring tension (how much the beater returns on its own), beater angle (the distance travelled before impact) and footboard height. A beater set far back builds up speed and hammers the surface; set too close, it rests against the pad and chokes its response. On an electronic kit that adjustment does double duty, because impact force becomes a velocity value in the module — changing beater angle changes the dynamic curve you record.

When a single pedal is still the right call

A double solves one specific problem: passages calling for two kick notes faster than one foot can deliver under control. If that is not the music you play today, the second side arrives as extra weight on the floor and one more variable to adjust.

Before buying that second pedal, it is worth measuring how much your right foot still has left to give. The heel-toe technique — rocking the foot to pull two strokes from a single motion — gets clean doubles out of a single pedal, and drilling it pays off more than new hardware in your first years on the instrument. Can you fit a double pedal to any electronic drum kit?

Not to any of them. A beaterless sensor pedal takes no second beater at all — the electronics live inside the pedal body itself.
